Everything is relative and Burpees aren’t so bad

Stacey Eberhard

Stacey Eberhard, one of my Facebook friends and a far better Crossfitter than I ever will be, summed up Wednesday’s workout in one sentence: “Another day I looked forward to the burpees.”

I wouldn’t know what else to say about the workout at Warrior Crossfit Muscatine, which consisted of six sets of overhead squats, burpees and what they call wall balls.  The sets were done in descending repetitions: 24, 20, 16. 12, 8 and 4.

For the non-math majors, that is 84 times.

I complain all the time about burpees. I will always complain about them. The wall balls weren’t much fun either.  But neither the burpees nor the wall balls — as bad as they may have been — kept up with the hell of the overhead squats. Even I found myself looking forward to the burpees.

As Bart Simpson would say: Aye carumba.

But in what is becoming a recurring theme: I finished the damn workout. It took me 24:41 to get through it, but I did it. And by Friday, I’ll be ready to hit it again.

Coming up: Things may be a bit silent for a few days on Brome Hill. But that doesn’t mean I will be.

I will be the guest of Muscatine Mayor DeWayne “Hoppi” Hopkins at 8:30 a.m. Thursday on his radio show. If you want to listen or call in, the 60-minute show is on KWPC 860-AM. And I think you should be able to listen to it on the web, too. The phone number is 263-8600.

I’m not sure what we’ll talk about — Blue Zones maybe and whatever else is of interest to the mayor.

I’m looking forward to it because it may be the first time I’ve ever done something like this where no one calls in to ask why some idiot thought the comics page needed to be changed.

Keith Porter

Speaking of Blue Zones: I could be wrong, but I’m pretty sure I spotted Keith Porter, director of policy and outreach at The Stanley Foundation, walking to work this morning. Of course, he could have just been following in the footsteps of his boss,Vladimir Sambaiew, the foundation president. I see him walking to work most mornings.

Congratulations and thank you to both of them for acting as if Muscatine has already been named as a Blue Zone community. We’ll find out next week if it has been.
