A place for New Beginnings in Muscatine

PaulinaToday, the blog is giving up its space for the normal daily nonsense in order to promote the good work of the MCSA Domestic Violence Shelter.

As you may know, in my day job, I am deputy director at MCSA, which is the nonprofit organization that runs the homeless and domestic violence shelters in Muscatine, Iowa. My duties include fundraising, grant writing, marketing, publicity and the like. In that role, I’ve helped a little bit with planning for the 13th annual New Beginnings fundraiser for the DV Shelter. It will be held at 6 p.m. on Saturday, April 11, at Geneva Golf & Country Club in Muscatine. Tickets still may be purchased online for $60 each or at MCSA, 312 Iowa Ave. in Muscatine.

In advance of the event, the Muscatine Journal published a story about  Paulina, a resident at the MCSA Domestic Violence Shelter whose real name has been withheld to protect her. But her story sounds familiar to anyone who knows about domestic abuse.

“I always went back with my abuser. He broke me down emotionally, mentally, physically, everything,” said Paulina, who is in her early 30s and staying with her two children for the second time at the Muscatine shelter.

Please take a few minutes to click on the link and read the full story on the Journal’s website.

While you’re at it, please go here to see a slide show of photos from the 2014 New Beginnings event and watch this video to learn more about the MCSA Domestic Violence Shelter and New Beginnings.
