A meme I agree with is circulating on Facebook. Here it is if you haven’t seen it.
My challenge this morning is a creative tank that I am working to refill, so this effort will be short.
Maybe it’s just me, but a word I keep hearing over and over is storytelling. To wit:
- Just this morning, this quote from writer Anne McCaffrey appeared in my Twitter feed: Tell a story! Don’t try to impress your reader with style or vocabulary or neatly turned phrases. Tell the story first.
- Just a week ago, at the church I attend, we were challenged to write an elevator speech of a few hundred words about our faith. In other words, tell our stories.
- Awhile back, I stumbled across this Harvard Business Review story about the importance of storytelling in the business world.
- At the same time, I’ve been reading and listening to blogs and podcasts on the importance of storytelling when it comes to philanthropy and fundraising, which are what I do for my day job.
All of these things seem to make what goes on at this blog even more important than it might have been otherwise. After all, if nothing else, this is a good place to practice telling stories.
But the well is low today. I’ll refill it and come back tomorrow. Hope to see you then.
I love hearing stories! I am a storyteller (not a great creative author like many), but still, I love telling stories. So I write my blogs … as a storyteller. I don’t have many WordPress followers, but when I put on Facebook, my friends re-share them to give their other friends a bright spot in their day. I will forward to reading some of your stories and I will pop over and have a look at your site when I get home from work tonight (Australia time). Good luck with the creativity!
