Just when it seems as if the talking heads on AM-radio and the 24-hour cable-news TV channels can’t get any more irresponsible, along comes something like the shooting death of Trayvon Martin.
From this to this, the chattering class has already said too much about the death of this young man. And the more they continue to say, the more likely it is that no one will ever really know what really happened.
Eric Zorn, a columnist and blogger for the Chicago Tribune, nicely summarized the situation today.
But to blame Martin’s death on his hooded sweatshirt strikes me as one of the dumbest things Geraldo Rivera has said in a long career of saying dumb things. Reaction to Rivera’s comments about hoodies also illustrates some of the great things about social media and what the Internet has become. Almost immediately, this site was launched. And protesters nationwide have taken to wearing hooded sweatshirts. There are a lot of sweatshirts popping up today in pictures being posted on Facebook and Twitter.
So I’ve also jumped on this Internet meme with a picture of me in a hooded sweatshirt. I can’t help but wonder if George Zimmerman would think I look all gangster, too.

What does he say that is irresponsible? He was careful to neither convict Zimmerman nor to judge the victim. He seems to merely voice sympathy for parents whose son has been killed. Is that really that bad?
I remember a time where Geraldo Rivera would proudly wear a hoodie. But since he’s thrown his lot in with FOX News—man, times have changed.
