I’m as bad about this as everyone else because knowing that it could be 17 below when I wake up Monday morning doesn’t leave me with a warm and fuzzy feeling. Maybe that’s why I liked this Facebook posting Friday morning by syndicated columnist Connie Schultz. For those of you who don’t know, Schultz is married to U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio.
Yeah, they’re both liberals and I may agree with their politics more than you do. But that’s not why I like the photo.
Republican or Democrat, there is something I like about a U.S. senator who still drives himself. And it’s nice to see someone as powerful as a U.S. senator struggle with the some of the same things that trouble the rest of us in the middle of winter. But what I really like is that three of Brown’s neighbors helped dig him out after he got stuck while driving his car.
For all I know, one or two of these guys might well be a Republican who disagrees with Brown on all of the issues we spend too much time arguing about in this country. At least I’d like to think that’s the case.
If so, they helped him anyway. And I’d still like to think that’s the American way. It’s something for the rest of us to think about the next time we have to dig out from under a heavy snow.
