There’s William Tecumseh Sherman — an American soldier, businessman, educator and author remembered for the “scorched earth” policies he implemented in capturing Atlanta during the Civil War — who declined to run for the Republican presidential nomination in 1884.
“If nominated, I will not run; if elected, I will not serve,” said Sherman, who died in 1891 at age 71.
