Rules are made to be broken.
It’s better to beg for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.
These are “rules” I have often followed, which may explain the recent Facebook quiz that labeled me as an “idealistic rebel.” It may also explain not precisely following the WordPress Daily Prompt I picked today for inspiration — Ebb and Flow: Our blogs morph over time, as interests shift and life happens. Write a post for your blog — but three years in the future.
Instead of doing that, I decided to go back as close as possible to this date in each of the past three years and see what I blogged about. A lot of life has happened in that time. How much has Brome Hill morphed? After looking through old posts, I tend to write a lot in January about cold weather, RAGBRAI and making resolutions.
It all makes sense to me. You’ll have to judge for yourself how much the blog has morphed.

They don’t call it Trivia Crack for nothing
In the car Monday, I heard just a bit of this National Public Radio story, Bored … And Brilliant? A Challenge to Disconnect From Your Phone.
By using my iPhone, I later was able to find the story and listen to all of it. But that might be the last of the good things I can say today about my smart-phone. According to the story, the research group, Flurry, found that mobile consumers spend an average of 2 hours and 57 minutes each day on their mobile devices.

Odds and ends after a hedonistic weekend
If I had planned to walk out or blog about it later, I would have taken a photo of the sign at the ticket counter Saturday night at The Palms 10 Theatres in Muscatine.
Or, If I had given it some thought, maybe I’d have just gone to see a different movie.
Among other things, the sign stated many parts of Wolf of Wall Street are very graphic and that the theater would not give refunds to anyone who walked out. But how bad could it be? I’ve been known to swear too much. (The f-word is used more than 500 times in this movie.) And I’m definitely not a prude.(But how many times do you have to show someone snorting cocaine off of a beautiful woman’s naked breasts or butt cheeks?)

Toby Keith ought to meet Bob Hayes.
And, for that matter, Chuck Vesey and Charlie Harper. But for today, the spotlight is on Hayes, a 69-year-old retired Muscatine accountant.
While the country music superstar sings the anthem for how lots of people age, Ain’t As Good As I Once Was, Hayes is riding a bicycle faster than ever.
He retired 4 1/2 years ago after working 28 years for HNI Corp. and its subsidiaries. In 2012, he bicycled 4,000 miles and he set a personal record during the roller races held Saturday at Harper’s Cycling & Fitness in Muscatine by going two miles in 7 minutes and 22 seconds.
“That’s my fastest time ever in 20 years,” Hayes said afterward.
Brome Hill
