The 2013 battle of the bulge

rowingThe New Year begins Tuesday.

With it comes New Year’s resolutions. And topping the list for many will be their resolution to join a gym, eat better and lose weight.

A fact of life is that some year-round gym rats are not crazy about their turf being invaded by at least some newcomers who will go to the gym for a few days or weeks and then quit.

I say the more the merrier and if it takes a New Year’s resolution to get someone to the gym, I wish them luck. And if they happen to live in Muscatine and join the Muscatine Community Y, I’d also point out that I teach cycling classes at 6:30 p.m. on Mondays, 5:45 a.m. on Fridays and 1 p.m. on Sundays. Please come.

But the battle lines are already being drawn by some of those who exercise regularly and some of those who do not. And my Facebook friends are taking sides:

One posted this on Friday:

LarryIn his defense, Larry has offered me a lot of encouragement at the gym. I’m pretty sure he will be supportive of newcomers he sees there next week.

One person he probably won’t have to worry about, however, is my friend, Laura, who posted this Friday:

LauraI don’t know Laura well, but I admire the attitude she shows in what she says and does.

To each his own, I say.

Good luck with whatever you resolve to do in 2012.

My resolutions: Last year I resolved to read more books. And I’ve lost count, but I read somewhere in the neighborhood of 25 of them in 2012. I want to read even more in 2013.

In addition to hitting the books, I resolve to:

  • Never complain about my job after spending eight months without one in 2012.
  • Keep going to the gym. Now, if I could just resolve to quit drinking beer and eating pizza.
